The full ladder, monthly and annual
Seven rungs cover almost every SEO job an Indian company actually posts. The bands are wide on purpose, because they genuinely are wide — the same title at a Bengaluru product company and an Indore services agency can differ by 3x.
These are market ranges we see in hiring and in client conversations, not survey data. Nobody publishes a reliable SEO salary census in India. Anyone quoting one to the rupee invented it.
| Role | Experience | Monthly (INR) | Annual (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intern / trainee | 0–6 months | ₹8,000–₹25,000 stipend | ₹1,00,000–₹3,00,000 |

| SEO Specialist (content or on-page) | 2–5 years | ₹50,000–₹1,00,000 | ₹6,00,000–₹12,00,000 |

The capability that earns each jump
Every band above answers one question: what can this person be left alone with? Promotions in SEO follow the answer, not the calendar.
Intern to Executive — finishing things
Nothing clever. Accuracy, deadlines, and not needing to be chased. A trainee who delivers 40 correctly optimised pages on the date promised gets confirmed; one who delivers 60 with errors doesn't.
Executive to Senior Executive — explaining why a number moved
The first real jump. You stop reporting what happened and start saying why. "Traffic is down 18%" is executive work. "Traffic is down 18% because 200 product pages lost internal links in the July release, here's the URL list" is the band above.
It's also where you learn to read Search Console rather than screenshot it. Filtering to the fifteen queries that make money, instead of a site-wide average, is a surprisingly rare skill.
Senior Executive to Specialist — owning one discipline unsupervised
Pick a lane and go deep enough that nobody reviews your work. Content and on-page is the crowded lane; technical is the better-paid one, which is why the two specialist rows above differ by nearly ₹10 lakh at the top end.
For the technical route, the capability that opens the door is answering "why isn't Google seeing this page?" from evidence — crawl data, rendered HTML, server logs. Log file analysis is the single skill most likely to move someone into that band.
Specialist to Manager — writing and defending a plan
The jump from doing to deciding, and the largest pay step on the ladder. You put a quarter's plan in front of a founder, explain the trade-offs, and take the blame when a bet doesn't pay. Technical skill is assumed by now; the argument is what you're paid for. Managing people is often part of it but isn't what earns the band — plenty of managers manage nobody and are paid for owning the number.
Manager to Head of SEO — forecasting and budget defence
You're arguing for organic against paid in a meeting where somebody has to lose. That needs a forecast you'll be held to, a hiring plan, and a view on where search demand in your category goes over three years. Very few people can do this, which is why the band is what it is and why those roles stay open for months.
City multipliers: what the same role pays where
Location still moves Indian SEO pay by 30–50% for identical work. Remote hiring compressed it and didn't close it, because employers benchmark against local cost of living and — more importantly — against how many other employers are bidding for the same person.
Read the multipliers against the national mid-band for a role. A manager on a ₹12,00,000–₹25,00,000 band sits near the top of it in Bengaluru and near the bottom in Indore.
| City | Multiplier | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru | 1.15–1.35x | Deepest pool of product companies and export-facing agencies bidding for the same people |
| Delhi NCR (Gurugram, Noida) | 1.10–1.30x | Large agency market plus brand-side and marketplace teams |
| Mumbai | 1.10–1.25x | Media, BFSI, D2C and big brand teams; highest cost of living to spend it in |
| Pune | 0.95–1.15x | Strong SaaS and IT services base, smaller agency market |
| Hyderabad, Chennai | 0.90–1.10x | Product and IT services presence; fewer competing employers than Bengaluru |
| Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Indore, Kochi, Coimbatore | 0.65–0.85x | Real services hubs with real work, but far fewer buyers for your time |
| Fully remote, Indian employer | 0.85–1.05x | Better than a tier-2 local offer, usually below a metro in-office one |
Agency, in-house or product company
Employer type moves the number about as much as city does, and for a structural reason rather than a cultural one.
- Domestic services agency — lowest band. Your salary is a slice of a retainer that also funds tools, management, four disciplines and margin. What you get instead is volume: fifteen sites and three migrations in two years, which is the fastest way to get genuinely good.
- Export-facing agency — 20–40% above domestic. Revenue in dollars and pounds, competing globally for the same person. Also the usual training ground for anyone who later works remotely for overseas clients.
- In-house at a traditional business — mid-band. Stable, slower, and often the most interesting technical problems, because the site is old and complicated.
- Product company, marketplace or funded startup — top band. Benchmarked against engineering and product pay rather than agency margins.
- Founder or freelancer — no band at all. Revenue, not salary, and a sales job with SEO delivery attached. How much SEO pays across all four routes compares them properly.
What AI skills do to your band
Two effects pulling in opposite directions, and which one you feel depends on the rung you're standing on.
Below the specialist band, AI compresses pay. The work that fills an executive's week — meta tags, keyword grouping, first drafts, report summaries — has a checkable right answer, which is exactly what software does well now. Fewer of those seats get funded, and the survivors expect more.
Above the specialist band, AI fluency adds to your band. Not because you can prompt a chatbot — everyone can — but because a small set of adjacent capabilities are now genuinely scarce.
- Building and auditing content pipelines. Anyone can generate 200 pages. Few can build a process that keeps them accurate, differentiated and on the right side of Google's scaled-content line.
- Optimising for AI answers. How brands get cited in AI Overviews and assistants is emerging and badly understood — generative engine optimization is the label it's settling on, and early credible expertise is being paid for.
- Verification and editorial accountability. In fintech, health and legal, the person who signs off that a draft is correct is now the expensive person in the room. A subject-matter skill, not a writing one.
- Data and scripting. Search Console API, warehouse queries, automated crawl diffs. This always paid more; the gap just widened.
How to use these numbers without embarrassing yourself
Ranges are ranges for a reason. A ₹6,00,000–₹12,00,000 specialist band means the person at the top does measurably different work from the person at the bottom. Quoting the top of a band without evidence you belong there is how you lose the room. Bring what you moved, on which site, with before-and-after numbers you can explain from memory.
Titles inflate fastest at the bottom. "SEO Manager" on a three-year CV usually means managing a checklist, not a plan. If you're hiring, interview for what somebody decided, not what they did. If you're job-hunting, be honest with yourself about which one you've been doing.
Aggregate salary sites over-report Indian marketing pay, because self-reported data skews toward metros, larger employers and people happy enough with their number to submit it. Use them for shape, never for a target.
