What AI visibility actually measures
Three separate things, usually blurred into one word.
Presence — does it name you at all in your category? Position — first of three vendors, or fourth of six? Framing — is the description accurate? A brand can be highly visible and consistently mischaracterised, which is worse than absent.
None of it appears in Search Console, Analytics or any rank tracker. Assistants don't publish impression data, and referral traffic under-reports badly because most assistant use ends in the assistant. If you want to manage this, you'll have to measure it yourself.
Build the prompt set: 25 questions, then freeze them
The value is in the fixed set. Twenty-five prompts you never change gives you a comparable number month over month. Twenty-five prompts you tweak each time gives you a mood.
Write them the way a buyer would type them, not the way a keyword tool would. Mix the stages:
- Category discovery — "best SEO agencies in Bangalore for a B2B SaaS company".
- Solution comparison — "SEO agency vs in-house SEO hire in India".
- Price — "how much should SEO cost per month in India".
- Objection — "how do I know if my SEO agency is scamming me".
- Brand — "what is Last Agency", "is Last Agency any good". These catch mischaracterisation early.
Why one check proves nothing, and how to sample
Generated answers aren't deterministic. The same prompt, same assistant, five minutes apart, can name a different set of brands. Retrieval varies, sampling varies, location varies. A single screenshot showing you in the answer is a coin flip you won, not a measurement.
So sample. Run each prompt three times in fresh sessions, signed out, and record how many named you. Three of three is presence. One of three is noise — don't celebrate it, don't panic about it.
Do it on the same date each month, and from India if you sell in India — location changes the answer. Twenty-five prompts across three assistants at three runs each is 225 checks, roughly two hours a month. That's the real cost, and it's why almost nobody does it and almost everybody has an opinion about their AI visibility anyway.
What actually improves it
Nothing exotic, which is the disappointing part. Assistants retrieve from the open web and from what they absorbed in training, so the levers are the old ones pointed at narrower targets.
Publish the most specific answer available to each buyer sub-question — a real number, a stated price, a named method. Get named in third-party comparisons, forums and podcasts, because that's what gets read when a model is asked who to hire. Keep your entity data consistent. Make sure the pages are crawlable by the agents you want retrieving them.
If you'd rather that ran as a programme than a personal chore, it sits inside our SEO work. The measurement above costs nothing but a Tuesday morning, and you should own it either way.
