AI Mode and AI Overviews are not the same surface
An AI Overview is a block that sits on top of a normal results page. The ten blue links are still underneath it. AI Mode is a separate tab: you ask, Google writes the whole answer, and you keep asking follow-ups in the same thread. There's no ranked list to scroll to.
The practical difference matters. An AI Overview competes with your listing for attention. AI Mode replaces the listing unless Google chooses to cite you. On the same query you can rank third organically and be completely absent from the AI Mode answer — those are two separate contests with two separate scoreboards.
Query fan-out: one question becomes many
Google describes AI Mode as using a query fan-out technique. Your single question gets broken into sub-topics, Google runs multiple searches across those sub-topics simultaneously in the background, and the answer is assembled from what comes back.
So if someone asks AI Mode whether an SEO retainer is worth it for a twelve-person SaaS company, it isn't hunting for a page with that title. It's separately searching what a retainer includes, what SEO costs in India, how long SEO takes for SaaS, and what the alternatives are — then pulling the best source it can find for each fragment.
That changes what a good site looks like. One enormous ultimate guide answers one fragment well and the rest adequately, so it wins one citation slot at most. A cluster of tight pages, each genuinely the best answer to one narrow question, can be pulled for several fragments of the same conversation. This is the whole structural argument for a topic cluster over a monolith.
What actually gets pulled as a source
Nobody outside Google has the selection logic, and anyone who tells you they do is selling something. But the pattern across surfaces is consistent enough to plan around.
- An extractable answer, early. If the answer to the sub-query is in paragraph fourteen after an anecdote, it's harder to lift than one sitting in the first hundred words.
- Specificity that can't be paraphrased from anywhere else — a real number, a named process, a stated price. Generic advice is interchangeable, so any source will do, and it won't be yours.
- Corroboration. Claims that line up with what other credible sources say are safer for a model to repeat. Contrarian claims need visible evidence attached or they get dropped.
- Crawl access from the right agent. Googlebot governs whether the page can be retrieved at all; Google-Extended governs training use. Block the wrong one in
robots.txtand you vanish from answers, not just training data. - Freshness on anything dated. Pricing, tool comparisons and anything with a year in the query skew hard toward recently updated pages.
How to check whether you appear
Badly, is the honest answer. Google folds AI Mode data into the ordinary Web search type in Search Console rather than breaking it out, so there's no filter that isolates it and no chart you can point at in a board meeting.
What's left is manual. Take twenty to thirty questions a real buyer would type, run them in AI Mode once a month, and record whether you were cited, linked or absent. Log it in a sheet with the date. It's the same method used for AI visibility generally — tedious, unglamorous, and currently the only free option that produces a trend line.
Two things make the manual check less misleading. Sign out or use a clean browser profile, so personalisation doesn't flatter you. And run each prompt twice, because these answers vary between runs on identical input — a single check tells you almost nothing.
On public numbers: Google hasn't published click-through data for AI Mode. The nearest real evidence is Pew Research Center's March 2025 analysis of US search behaviour, which found people clicked a link on roughly 8% of visits to a results page carrying an AI summary, against about 15% without one.
