Why directories own the first page, and where they're weak
IndiaMART, TradeIndia and ExportersIndia rank for your products for three unromantic reasons: domain age, enormous link profiles, and millions of indexed URLs covering every plausible product-and-city permutation. They also satisfy a real intent — a purchase manager who wants three quotes by lunchtime genuinely is better served by a directory than by any single manufacturer's site.
So don't leave them. Run the listings, pay for leads if the maths works, and understand what you're buying: an enquiry four competitors received at the same moment, where the only remaining variable is price.
Then look at what those pages can't do. Every listing is structurally identical, the specifications are shallow, and there's no selection guidance at all. A directory can't answer "which pump for a 45-metre head at 200 litres per minute" because it doesn't know anything — it's an index, not an engineer. You do know. That asymmetry is the entire strategy. There's a second, quieter opening too: buyers use a directory to build a shortlist, then Google the company name to check it's real. Most Coimbatore manufacturers have never looked at their own brand SERP.
Build the keyword set from the spec sheet, not from a keyword tool
Technical buyers search in units. Horsepower, head in metres, discharge in litres per minute, bore diameter, phase, stage count. "5 hp openwell submersible pump price", "3 phase monoblock 2 hp", "borewell pump for 100 feet". Nobody types "quality pump manufacturer in Coimbatore" except your competitors' SEO agencies.
Low volume, extraordinary intent. A page getting 30 visits a month and producing two RFQs a quarter beats a blog post with 3,000 readers, in any business where one order is worth more than a year of writing the page. Report enquiries, not sessions — the difference between B2B and B2C SEO is mostly this point. The discipline is in what you don't publish: four filters with twenty values each is 160,000 possible URLs, and generating them is scaled content abuse with extra steps.
Productmarkup withadditionalPropertyper specification, plusmodelandmanufacturer. The machine-readable version of your spec sheet.- Performance curves as images with descriptive alt text, and the same data repeated as an HTML table so it's indexable.
- Downloadable datasheets and catalogues — PDFs rank on their own, and they're what a design engineer forwards internally.
- One page per meaningful application, not per SKU permutation: agriculture, dewatering, domestic overhead, industrial process.
| Buyer's query | What a directory gives them | What your page can give them |
|---|---|---|
| "5 hp openwell submersible pump" | A price band, a phone number, four competing sellers | Performance curve, head-versus-discharge table, motor efficiency class, warranty terms |
| "pump for 45 m head 200 lpm" | Nothing — selection isn't something a directory does | A selection table that lands the buyer on one model number |
| "IE3 vs IE2 motor running cost" | Nothing | A worked annual energy-cost comparison at industrial tariffs |
| "<your brand> review" | A seller profile you don't control | Your own site, Business Profile and certifications — a clean brand SERP |
Export buyers search differently, and they search in English
Coimbatore has exported pumps, motors, textile machinery and castings for decades, and an overseas buyer's search behaviour looks nothing like a domestic one. The vocabulary shifts first: *manufacturer*, *supplier*, *exporter* and *OEM* are four different intents. Trade terminology shows up inside the queries themselves — MOQ, FOB, CIF, HS code, container load — and pages that use that language both rank for it and signal you've done this before. Alibaba and the global directories are the competition here rather than IndiaMART, beatable for exactly the same reason.
Country pages are worth building only where you genuinely export and can service the market. Five thin pages naming five continents is a liability; two substantial ones with real logistics detail, certification coverage and lead times are an asset. More on that split in SEO for exporters.
- An enquiry form that accepts international phone formats and doesn't demand a PIN code. This sounds trivial and it costs Coimbatore exporters real money every week.
- Lead times, packing standards, container loading and documentation stated plainly. Every overseas buyer asks; almost no Indian manufacturer publishes.
- A named export contact with a working email and a WhatsApp number, not a generic sales alias.
- Trade-fair and CODISSIA exhibition presence written up on your own site — it earns links and it proves you exist.
Tamil for the shop floor, English for the buyer
The language question here has a clean answer, and it isn't the one most agencies give. Export and national B2B search happens in English, essentially always — your buyer in Nairobi or Pune is not typing Tamil.
Local consumer search is a different market inside the same city. Jewellery, wet grinders, retail, clinics, coaching, home services — those appear in Tamil script and, more often, transliterated. "Kovai" outperforms "Coimbatore" in plenty of local queries, which alone is worth checking in your Search Console export. So language follows the buyer, not the address: a pump exporter in Peelamedu doesn't need a Tamil website; a Coimbatore jeweller or dental clinic almost certainly does, along with a Business Profile carrying Tamil-language reviews.
What this costs, and what counts as working
SEO from ₹75,000/mo, smaller sites from ₹40,000/mo, ex-GST. Month-to-month after the first quarter, 30 days' notice, and every page, schema block and tracking setup stays yours when you leave.
The first quarter is unglamorous: baseline frozen, site crawled, spec architecture designed, product and certification schema shipped, brand SERP cleaned up, first cluster of specification pages published. Manufacturing content is slow to write because it has to be right, and we'd rather ship six pages an engineer will defend than thirty an agency generated. What we don't do is promise position one for "pump manufacturer in Coimbatore" — nobody controls Google's index, and the query wouldn't pay for itself anyway. We freeze your trailing-90-day qualified enquiries from organic search on day one, and if we haven't beaten that in 90 days we keep working free until we do. See how the guarantee works.
- Measure: RFQs and quote requests from organic, tracked calls, export enquiry volume. Not sessions.
- Expect: impressions on spec queries inside 4–8 weeks. Enquiry movement by month three.
- Bring: one engineer who'll answer questions for an hour a week. Without that, manufacturing content is guesswork and reads like it.
