The company outranking you doesn't own a factory
Search any product you make, with the word supplier or manufacturer after it. Count the organic results before you find a company that actually makes something. On most Indian industrial queries you'll get through four or five results first — IndiaMART, TradeIndia, Justdial, ExportersIndia — and above them, ads bought by the same platforms.
They're not outranking you because their content is better. They're outranking you on three structural advantages. Two decades of accumulated domain strength and links. A page for practically every product-and-city combination anyone has ever searched. And a listing format that happens to match a commercial query exactly — the searcher wanted a list of suppliers, and a list of suppliers is what a directory is.
You are not going to beat that on broad terms this year. What you can do is take the queries directories are structurally bad at, which is anything requiring real engineering detail.
Where a listing page can't follow you
A marketplace listing carries a company name, a product name, a price band and a contact button. It cannot carry a chemical composition table, a tolerance stack, an equivalent-standards chart or a downloadable STEP file. That's the gap, and it's where the buying decision actually happens.

Three page templates cover most of a catalogue
Industrial catalogues look infinite until you sort them. Almost everything a manufacturer sells fits one of three page shapes, and each shape has a fixed list of what has to be on it before it's worth publishing.
Grade and material pages
- Chemical composition and mechanical properties as tables, in HTML text.
- Equivalent standards across systems — IS, ASTM, EN, DIN, JIS. Buyers arrive holding whichever name their drawing uses.
- Available sizes, forms and finishes, with what you stock versus what you make to order.
- Typical applications, and one honest line on what the grade is wrong for. That line converts better than the rest of the page.
Process and capability pages
- The machine list with real numbers: bed size, axis count, bar capacity, maximum part weight, table swing.
- Achievable tolerance and surface finish, stated as a range with the conditions attached.
- Batch sizes you actually want, and the lead time from drawing to first article.
- Which steps are in-house and which are outsourced. Procurement asks this on every call, so answer it before the call.
Application and industry pages
- The problem the buyer's engineer is solving, in their vocabulary — not yours.
- The specification that follows from it, and the certification the sector demands.
- Which of your parts serve it, linked. This is where the internal linking work earns its keep.
- Sector-specific documentation you can supply: material traceability, PPAP, validation records.
Get the catalogue out of the PDF
The single most common technical failure on Indian manufacturing sites: the entire product data lives in a downloadable catalogue, and the website is eight pages of adjectives around a download button. Google can index a PDF, but it ranks poorly for specific queries, can't be internally linked with any precision, and converts badly because there's no enquiry path on page 47.
Rebuild the catalogue as HTML pages and keep the PDF as a supplementary download beside them. Same content, hugely different outcome — and a side benefit is that your sales team stops emailing a 40MB file to every prospect.
- Never put a spec table inside an image. A JPEG of a dimension chart is invisible to search and unusable on a phone. Mark it up as a real table.
- Don't gate the datasheet. The engineer who won't fill in a form is often the person writing your part number into the drawing. Gate the quote, not the data.
- Publish CAD downloads per part — STEP for assembly, DXF for sheet metal, IGES where it's still asked for. A part embedded in a customer's design is the strongest position you can hold.
- Add Product schema with specification properties so the numbers are machine-readable. Worth reading our note on schema markup before your developer improvises it.
- Give every part number its own URL — but only where the page carries genuinely different data. Twelve thousand near-identical pages is the exact pattern Google's scaled content policy targets, and industrial catalogues are a common offender.
Certifications do double duty
Certifications are the closest thing manufacturing has to a ranking cheat code, because they're simultaneously a trust signal for the buyer and a query in their own right. Procurement teams filter by them. Engineers search for them. And almost nobody publishes them properly.
The common mistake is a scanned certificate PDF on an "Our Certifications" page with no text around it. A scan is an image. Put the details on the page as text: standard, certificate number, issuing body, scope statement and validity period.
- Sector standards are searched directly: IATF 16949 for automotive, AS9100 for aerospace, ISO 13485 for medical devices, API monogram and ASME stamps for oil and gas, ATEX or IECEx for hazardous areas.
- Market access marks matter for export enquiries: CE and UKCA, UL listing, BIS or ISI licence for the domestic market, RoHS and REACH declarations.
- Material and test documentation is a query too: EN 10204 3.1 and 3.2 mill test certificates, NABL-accredited lab reports, PPAP submission levels.
- Scope is the part buyers check. An ISO 9001 certificate covering only your Pune unit shouldn't be presented as covering all three plants. Publish the scope line verbatim.
- Diarise expiry. An expired certificate on a live page is worse than no page, and it's the first thing a serious buyer's audit team will find.
The RFQ form is the product
All this work ends at one form, and most industrial enquiry forms are designed by someone who has never quoted a job. They ask for company size and how you heard about us, then give the buyer a single free-text box for a part that has fourteen relevant parameters.
Design the form the way your estimator thinks. A complete RFQ that can be quoted the same day is worth several times a vague one that starts a three-email clarification loop.

For a manufacturer with a brochure site, month one is unglamorous: get the catalogue out of PDFs, publish spec tables for your top twenty products, put the certification details in text, and rebuild the RFQ form. That work alone usually recovers ground before a single link is earned.
Then extend by page template rather than by volume — a batch of grade pages, check indexation after eight weeks, extend if they held. If 25 of 30 are indexed and gathering impressions, the template works. If half sit unindexed, publishing another hundred makes it worse, not better.
