What AUD 3,000–5,000 a month actually buys here
Australian SEO pricing is unusually consistent for a market this size. Small local campaigns quote around AUD 1,500–2,500 a month, the mid-market sits at AUD 3,000–5,000, and anything genuinely contested — national e-commerce, insurance, personal injury — starts above that. Treat those bands as the shape of the market, not a price list; they move.
The reason those numbers look steep next to an Indian or Filipino quote is not margin. It's payroll. A senior Australian SEO specialist costs a multiple of an equally senior Indian one, and a Melbourne agency carries superannuation at 12%, Victorian payroll tax above the threshold, four weeks of leave, and rent in the CBD or somewhere in the inner north pretending not to be the CBD.
| Monthly retainer | Realistic scope | Who it fits |
|---|---|---|
| AUD 1,500–2,500 | One site, a local keyword set, Google Business Profile, a few pages a month, light technical work | Single-location trades, clinics, cafés with a delivery arm |
| AUD 3,000–5,000 | A technical programme, 4–8 content pieces, digital PR outreach, real reporting, a named strategist | Multi-location services, established e-commerce, B2B with an actual pipeline |
| AUD 6,000+ | Multi-market or multi-brand work, migrations, in-house coordination, a dedicated pod | National retail, franchise groups, regulated categories |
When you genuinely need someone in Melbourne
This is the section most agency location pages leave out. There are Melbourne briefs we turn down, and they tend to look like this.
- Your growth runs on local press. If the plan involves The Age, Broadsheet or a Herald Sun business page, you want someone who already knows those desks. Cold outreach from an Indian inbox to a Melbourne newsroom converts badly, and pretending otherwise burns your money and our reputation.
- Your links come from memberships and sponsorships. Master Builders Victoria, the VACC, your council's business directory, the netball club whose jerseys carry your logo. Those links exist because someone in your industry knows you. An agency can chase them; it can't manufacture the relationship.
- Someone has to walk the site. Multi-site retail, a showroom, a fit-out. Store photography, on-site audits, training counter staff to ask for reviews — that's physical work.
- You need people on Melbourne morning time, daily. Melbourne runs four and a half to five and a half hours ahead of India. A 3pm Melbourne call is 9:30am in Bengaluru — a real overlap, and we use it. An 8am stand-up is 2:30am, and anyone promising to take that one daily is lying to at least one of us.
- You're in a regulated health category and want local legal cover. See the callout below.
Trades, clinics and franchises: the map pack is the whole game
Three Melbourne categories dominate local search competition, and each breaks differently.
Trades — plumbers, sparkies, builders, arborists — compete almost entirely inside the local pack on suburb-level queries. Proximity to the searcher is the heaviest signal Google applies, which is why a mediocre Brunswick electrician beats an excellent Frankston one for a Brunswick search. What you can control is category selection, review velocity, service-area configuration, and whether your suburb pages say anything a human wrote.
Clinics — dental, physio, cosmetic, allied health — face identical pack maths plus an advertising regulator, which changes the review playbook that works everywhere else.
Franchise groups have the hardest version. Forty near-identical location pages is a duplication problem before it's a ranking problem, and franchise SEO is mostly governance: who owns the profile, who answers reviews, who stops the Ballarat franchisee buying links on the group's domain.
com.au, hosting and whether you need an Australian entity
Three questions get tangled together in nearly every Melbourne pitch. They are separate questions with separate answers.
The domain
.com.au requires an Australian presence to register — an ABN, an ACN or an Australian trade mark — under auDA policy. Since 2022 you can also register a direct .au. Because it's a country-code domain, it geo-targets Australia clearly and permanently.
That's an advantage if you're Australia-only for the foreseeable future, and a ceiling if you later want Singapore or Auckland. Australia-only: take the .com.au. Anything else: take the .com and build country folders.
The hosting
Server location is close to irrelevant as a ranking signal, especially behind a country-code domain or a CDN. It still matters for latency, and latency shows up in Core Web Vitals. Choose the fast option, not the patriotic one.
The entity
You do not need an Australian company to rank in Australia. You do need a genuine Australian address and phone number to hold a Google Business Profile for a Melbourne location, and verification is stricter than it was five years ago. If you have no real presence in Victoria, don't invent one — Google is unforgiving on address problems and reinstatement can take months you don't have.
What we're actually good at from this distance
Strip out everything that needs a Melbourne postcode and a surprising amount remains — usually the part that's been quietly neglected while everyone argued about the map pack.
- Technical. Crawling, indexing, Core Web Vitals, schema, migrations. None of it cares where the person typing sits.
- Content at volume. Suburb pages that aren't spun, service pages that answer the question a buyer actually typed, comparison content that catches people earlier than your competitors do.
- Programmatic and e-commerce. Faceted navigation, category architecture, thousands of URLs kept out of trouble. This is where an Indian cost base buys you more work per dollar rather than the same work cheaper.
- National organic rather than local. If you sell Australia-wide, the pack matters far less than the fact that you have twelve pages and the market leader has four hundred.
How the guarantee reads in AUD
We don't promise you a position. Nobody controls Google's index, and an agency promising a number-one for a Melbourne commercial term is either guessing or planning to buy links with your domain name attached to them.
What we do instead: on day one we freeze your trailing-90-day count of qualified leads from organic search. Not sessions, not average position — leads, in your CRM, attributed to organic. If we haven't beaten that number within 90 days, we keep working free until we do.
Currency changes none of the mechanics and all of the stakes. Our SEO starts at ₹75,000 a month ex-GST, smaller sites from ₹40,000 — convert on the day you sign, because the rupee moves and we won't pretend otherwise. See our pricing in full and how the SEO engagement runs. If the work is genuinely map-pack-first, read what a local SEO programme costs first.
It's also why we cap ourselves at three new clients a month. You can't carry that downside at volume, and any agency offering the same promise to fifty accounts hasn't done the arithmetic.
