The Kolkata discount is real — and about half of it is honest
Kolkata quotes cheaper than every other metro in India for the same work. That's not a rumour and it isn't a race to the bottom. Salaries in the city sit well below Bengaluru, Mumbai and Gurgaon for comparable roles, and commercial rent in Salt Lake Sector V — where most of the city's digital agencies actually sit — is a fraction of what an equivalent floor costs in Whitefield or Lower Parel.
So a genuine 15–20% discount is baked into a Kolkata agency's cost base before anyone negotiates. That part you should happily take.
The problem is that the quotes are usually 30–40% cheaper, not 15–20%. The missing 15–20 points has to come from somewhere, and it almost always comes from the same three places: the link budget disappears, the paid tool licences get shared across forty accounts or dropped entirely, and every hour on your account is a junior hour with no senior review.
None of that is visible in a proposal. All of it is visible in one question, which is at the bottom of this page.
Kolkata against Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi NCR
These are the bands quotes cluster in, ex-GST, for comparable scope. They're observations of a market, not a survey — use them as a sanity check on the number in front of you rather than a price list.
- The gap is widest at the bottom and narrowest at the top. At ₹1,00,000+ the work needs senior people who can move cities, so their salaries — and your quote — converge. At ₹15,000 the gap is enormous because at that level you're buying local overheads, not expertise.
- A Kolkata agency competing for Bengaluru clients quotes Bengaluru prices. If you're a Kolkata business being quoted ₹1,10,000, ask whether you're paying for delivery or for their sales pipeline.
| Scope | Kolkata | Bengaluru | Mumbai / Delhi NCR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local only — one location, under 20 pages | ₹8,000–₹18,000 | ₹12,000–₹25,000 | ₹15,000–₹30,000 |
| Small business, city-wide, 20–50 pages | ₹18,000–₹35,000 | ₹30,000–₹55,000 | ₹35,000–₹60,000 |
| Serious programme, national keyword set | ₹45,000–₹75,000 | ₹75,000–₹1,25,000 | ₹85,000–₹1,50,000 |
| Ecommerce or multi-location | ₹75,000–₹1,25,000 | ₹1,25,000–₹2,25,000 | ₹1,50,000–₹2,50,000 |
Ranking in Kolkata is a completely different budget from ranking in India
This is where most of the money in this city gets wasted. A Ballygunge dental clinic and a Kolkata-headquartered manufacturer exporting nationally have almost nothing in common, and they get sold near-identical retainers.
If your customers are in Kolkata, you are competing against a few dozen local businesses for map pack positions and a handful of city-qualified queries. That is a genuinely small job. It needs a correct Google Business Profile, real reviews arriving steadily, one strong page per service, consistent citations, and someone checking Search Console monthly. ₹15,000–₹25,000 a month covers it properly, and past that you're paying for work with nowhere to land.
If you're chasing national queries — a B2B manufacturer, a SaaS product, an exporter, an ecommerce brand — you're competing with agencies in Bengaluru and Gurgaon spending ₹1,50,000 a month. The Kolkata discount doesn't reduce the competition. That's a ₹75,000-plus job wherever your office is.
The honest test: open Search Console, look at your top queries, and count how many contain a place name. If most do, you're a local business and you should stop paying for a national programme. If almost none do, a ₹20,000 local package is going to lose to people spending five times more, every month, forever.
Bengali content and local pack work, costed
West Bengal is a Bengali-first market, and Kolkata search behaviour reflects that — plenty of buyers search in English, plenty search in Bengali script, and a meaningful chunk type Bengali words in Roman letters. Any agency treating Bengali as a translation task at the end of the process has misunderstood the market.
The costing surprises people, so here it is plainly.
- Bengali content is not cheaper than English. A competent Bengali writer costs about what a competent English one does, and there are far fewer of them who also understand search intent. Your constraint is throughput, not rate — expect two to four solid Bengali pieces a month, not twelve.
- Translation is not localisation. Machine-translating your English pages into Bengali produces pages that rank for nothing and read badly to the people who do find them. If Bengali matters, the page gets written in Bengali, by someone who talks to your customers.
- Google Business Profile setup and cleanup — ₹8,000–₹15,000 as a one-off, done properly: categories, services, real photos, hours, products, Q&A seeded with what people actually ask.
- Local citations and directory cleanup — ₹5,000–₹12,000 one-off. This is a finite job with an end, not a monthly subscription. Anyone billing you for citations every month for a year is billing you for finished work.
- Ongoing local pack management — ₹5,000–₹10,000 a month per location: review generation, posts, Q&A, spam-fighting competitors who keyword-stuff their business name.
What a Kolkata business should budget for its first six months
Here's a real six-month plan for a Kolkata SMB with a 25-to-50-page site, competing city-wide and starting from close to nothing. Ex-GST; add 18% at the invoice.
| Line | When | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Technical and content audit, with a written baseline | Month 1, one-off | ₹25,000–₹35,000 |
| Google Business Profile setup and citation cleanup | Month 1, one-off | ₹15,000–₹25,000 |
| Retainer — technical fixes, 2–3 articles a month, local pack work | Months 1–6 | ₹25,000/mo — ₹1,50,000 |
| Tools, if you're running any yourself | Ongoing | ₹4,000–₹8,000/mo |
| Developer time your agency will need and won't have | Months 2–4 | ₹15,000–₹30,000 |
| Six-month total, ex-GST | ₹2,20,000–₹3,00,000 |
The one question that separates a Kolkata bargain from a Kolkata mistake
Ask this: "How many hours a month does this fee fund, split by role, and which paid tools will run on my account?"
An agency whose price is low because Kolkata is genuinely cheaper answers in about ten seconds. They'll tell you it's a junior for two days a week plus a senior reviewing fortnightly, they run Ahrefs and Screaming Frog, and here's the content cadence. That's a bargain and you should take it.
An agency whose price is low because the work isn't there will explain that they don't think in hours. That's a real philosophy. It is also extremely convenient, and it is the single most reliable tell in this market.
For what it's worth, our own numbers: SEO from ₹75,000/mo, smaller sites from ₹40,000/mo. Organic Social & Content at ₹30,000, ₹50,000 or ₹70,000 a month. Performance Marketing at ₹40,000, ₹75,000 or ₹1,50,000. Bundled — SEO plus social ₹99,000/mo, social plus performance ₹75,000/mo, all three ₹1,75,000/mo. All ex-GST, ad spend billed separately with zero media markup, month-to-month after the first quarter.
We're more expensive than a Kolkata local agency and we say so plainly. What you get for the difference is a frozen baseline: your trailing-90-day qualified leads from organic search, written down on day one. Miss it in 90 days and we keep working free until we beat it. No promise about a ranking position, because that promise isn't ours to make. See how the guarantee works, or the full rate card. If the local option answers the hours question well, take the local option — that's a good outcome too.
