What SEO actually costs in Kolkata

The short answer

SEO in Kolkata is quoted anywhere from ₹5,000 to ₹2,00,000 a month, and the gap is real work, not margin. Below ₹15,000/mo you get part-time attention and directory links. A funded multi-discipline programme starts around ₹75,000/mo. Ours does, with smaller sites from ₹40,000/mo, ex-GST.

The short version

  • Price is the first question in this market, so here it is first: ₹75,000/mo standard, ₹40,000/mo for smaller sites, ex-GST.
  • The ₹8,000/month quote isn't a discount on the same service. It's a different, much smaller service with the same name.
  • Bengali search in Kolkata is mostly Banglish — Bengali typed in Roman letters — not Bengali script.
  • Leather, jute and tea exporters have buyers in Europe and the Gulf who search only in English. Local language work does nothing for them.
  • Coaching and admissions demand is calendar-shaped. Content published in April is worth several times the same content published in September.

The price bands, before anything else

Google's own People Also Ask box for this city asks what SEO costs in Kolkata before it asks anything else, which tells you exactly what's on the buyer's mind. So we'll lead with the number and earn the rest of your attention afterwards.

These bands are what we see quoted in this market. They're observations, not survey data — nobody publishes a credible price index for Indian SEO, and any agency showing you one built it themselves.

What monthly SEO spend buys in Kolkata. Ranges are market observations, ex-GST.

Why the cheapest quote usually costs more by month nine

This isn't a case for spending more. Plenty of Kolkata businesses genuinely should not be buying a ₹75,000 retainer, and we've told people so on the first call. It's a case for understanding what the cheap number leaves out, because the cost of finding out later isn't the retainer — it's the nine months.

Three specific ways low-cost engagements go wrong here, all of which we've cleaned up:

  1. Links from networks. The margin at ₹8,000/month doesn't fund real outreach, so links get bought in bulk from private blog networks. Those links are cheap because they're worthless, and disavowing a few hundred of them later is billable work you'll pay someone else for.
  2. Content written to a word count. Thin, unedited, near-duplicated across a dozen client sites. Google's helpful-content systems have been demoting exactly this pattern for years, and the pages don't just fail to rank — they can drag adjacent pages down with them.
  3. No baseline. If nobody wrote down what your organic leads were on day one, nobody can prove anything moved, which is convenient for the agency and expensive for you. Set the baseline before the work starts, whoever you hire.

Bengali, Banglish, and what Kolkata actually types

Bengali is West Bengal's official language and one of the most widely spoken languages in India, and Kolkata layers Hindi, Urdu and English on top of it. So the instinct to build a Bengali version of the site is reasonable. It's also usually the wrong first move.

The reason is keyboards. Native Bengali script requires a transliteration keyboard most people never enable, so real Kolkata search skews heavily to Banglish — Bengali words typed in Roman letters. "Bari bhara", "daktar", "dokan", "khabar" show up in Latin characters in query exports far more often than their script equivalents.

So the order of work is: mine your own Search Console for Banglish phrasings already reaching you, work them into the English pages that are already ranking, and only then decide whether Bengali-script pages are worth the permanent maintenance cost. For a diagnostics chain or a coaching institute, they often are. For a jute exporter, they never will be.

Leather, jute and tea: buyers who search only in English

Kolkata's oldest export trades are still its most searchable. The Calcutta Leather Complex at Bantala is one of Asia's largest planned tannery clusters, built to relocate the old Tangra and Topsia units. West Bengal produces the bulk of India's raw jute, the mills still line the Hooghly, and the National Jute Board sits in the city. Kolkata's tea auction centre and the trading houses around it remain a hinge point for Darjeeling and Assam.

None of those buyers search in Bengali. A sourcing manager in Milan or Dubai types specifications, and the pages that win are the ones carrying them in indexable text:

The pattern is the same as any other exporter's search problem — the specification is the keyword, and most Indian supplier sites bury it in a catalogue PDF where it ranks badly and can't be internally linked.

  • Material and grade — finished goat leather, crust cow hide, chrome-free tanned, jute hessian 10 oz, food-grade jute bags.
  • Certifications and compliance — Leather Working Group audit rating, REACH compliance, ISO 9001, Fairtrade, organic certification.
  • Capacity and commercial terms — MOQ, monthly output, lead time, Incoterms, port of loading.
  • Sourcing-shift queries — India alternative to China supplier, second-source manufacturer, ethical leather supplier India.
  • Tea specifics — auction lot descriptors, garden names, grade codes like FTGFOP1 that buyers genuinely type.

Coaching and admissions: demand with a calendar

Kolkata's education market — schools, colleges, and the coaching layer around board exams, JEE, NEET and WBJEE — has a demand curve you can set a watch by. Search spikes hard around board results and the admission window from roughly May into August, then falls away.

That changes when you publish, not what you publish. A comparison page about entrance coaching, an admission-process explainer, a fees page, a cut-off page — all of them need to be indexed, linked and already ranking before the spike, not during it. Google needs weeks to trust a new page. Publish in April and you own the May traffic. Publish in May and you watch someone else own it.

The practical version: we build the seasonal content in the quarter before the season, refresh the previous year's version rather than writing a new URL each year, and keep the URLs stable so the rankings compound instead of resetting annually. Rewriting last year's page beats publishing a new one almost every time — cheaper, faster, and it keeps the links.

How we're measured, and why we only take three clients a month

Everything above is market context you can act on with or without us. Here's the part that's about us, kept short.

We freeze your trailing-90-day count of qualified leads from organic search on day one, with the definition of "qualified" agreed in writing so nobody can move it later. If we haven't beaten that number in 90 days, we keep working free until we do. We don't promise you a position for a keyword — nobody controls Google's index, and Google's own guidelines warn against exactly that promise.

That guarantee is why we cap intake at three new clients a month across every city. Carrying real downside risk at volume is arithmetic that doesn't work, and agencies that claim to do it are either not carrying the risk or not honouring it.

What is the cost of SEO in Kolkata?

Quotes run from around ₹5,000 to ₹2,00,000 a month. Below ₹15,000 you're buying part-time attention and directory links. A funded programme with separate technical, content and link specialists starts around ₹75,000/mo, which is where ours starts, with smaller sites from ₹40,000/mo, ex-GST.

Why is SEO cheaper in Kolkata than in Mumbai or Bangalore?

Mostly salary costs and client expectations, not skill. The same work costs less to staff here. The risk is that some of the price gap isn't lower cost at all — it's less work, particularly technical work and real link outreach. Ask what hours go where before you compare two quotes.

Do I need Bengali content to rank in Kolkata?

Less often than you'd think. Most Bengali-language search here arrives as Banglish — Bengali typed in Roman letters — which strong English pages can rank for when those phrasings appear naturally in the copy. Bengali-script pages make sense for consumer categories like clinics, coaching and retail, rarely for B2B export.

Can SEO work for a jute, leather or tea exporter in Kolkata?

Yes, and it's usually underbuilt. Overseas buyers search material grades, certifications, capacities and Incoterms. Most Kolkata supplier sites keep all of that inside a downloadable PDF, where it ranks poorly and can't be internally linked. Converting the catalogue into HTML pages is often the single biggest available win.

How long before SEO shows results in Kolkata?

Four to eight weeks for a single-location local business, mostly from Business Profile and on-page work. Three to six months for a competitive national or export keyword set. Seasonal categories like coaching are different again — the content has to be live and indexed a full quarter before the admission spike.

Do you guarantee rankings?

No. We guarantee movement against your own baseline: your trailing-90-day qualified leads from organic search, frozen and agreed in writing on day one. If we haven't beaten it in 90 days, we keep working free until we do. Any agency guaranteeing a specific position for a specific keyword is guaranteeing something they don't control.
